How do ya no when a torque con is shot or going?
Woody,
What are your symptoms? A TC that creates vibration, poor torque transfer, will not allow part thottle cruise/accleration, makes the car creep excessively at normal idle speeds , or a high idle speed in gear (excessive slip) may be failing.
Along with the TC itself, there are several parts of the transmission that will affect TC operation, like the turbine shaft and shaft oil seal, stator oriface plug, and the converter output check valve.
There are several things that can fail within the TC itself, like the stator clutch, pump or turbine blade assemblies, the stator shaft and control pistons, case damage, etc., and all of these can exhibit different symptoms.
Generally, if you are going to remove the transmission for a failed TC, the best practice is to inspect the transmission for damage related to the TC (and any parts of it that may have been pumped through the transmission).
I'll defer any transmission advice to GM Tech. He is a regular authority on HydraMatics.
