I was told to change the oil after 100 miles or so. I think I waited 200. I babied the motor for the first 500 miles.

When you first start it, set the timing, and run it at 2000rpm for 45 min to break the cam in. Monitor the coolant temperature and add if needed. Change the oil. Adjust the idle and drive for 500 miles. Don't beat on it, but don't baby it either. Vary the rpm's to seat the rings and expose the engine to various loads and speeds. In general, drive easier at first, and by 500 miles, you should be driving it like you would normally. Change the oil again and that's it. You can use synthetic oil after the first 500 miles or anytime after that. Change your oil at regular intervals and keep everything in tune. Don't beat on it and it will last a very long time. Good luck.
