Why is my power steering whining?

I hope I put this in the right board... Lately my cars been making a whining sound whenever I turn the wheel. Two weeks ago I disconnected the belt that went from the a/c compressor to the power streering pump. After realizing that the a/c only takes power away from the engine when it's turned on I reattached the belt. Since then my steering has been tight. I've used 4 bottles of ps fluid since then but can see where the fluid it going. Any suggestions on where to start looking or what the problem is?

your probably leaking from somewhere.Check your return hose and your pressure hose 1st.If thats ok check your pump. The noise you hear means your low on fluid. There sould be two belts driving your power steering pully. If your not using your ac that belt you mentioned doesnt need to be installed.

Yeah I definitly am leaking from somewhere but I'm not familiar enough with the power steering system to know where the weak points are. I put in some of that anti-leak ps fluid but it's barly helping. O I have both belts running the ps. What parts of the ps system seem to fail first so I can use that as a starting point for diasnotic.

You could try parking the car on a clean patch of ground and looking where the power steering fluid is dripping down. Another area is where the pipes bolt into the steering box (look underneath where you pour the fluid into, you should be able to trace two hoses going to the steering box).

Best of luck.

Mark.

Get some brake cleaner (Cyclo brake and parts cleaner works real well), degreaser, oven cleaner, something of the sort: Spray off the lines and fittings. Also, if you can, get under the car and spray off the bottom of the power steering box, right around the pitman arm seal. Get those areas nice and clean. Then turn the wheel side to side a few times and watch for leaks (if you can get the car up on jackstands, under the front sway bar mounts, makes this part really easy).
