CHILTON MANUAL and valve lash.??

Axle/Gears: 3/73's
CHILTON MANUAL and valve lash.??

anybody ever read a chilton manual to do valve lash..?it says that with the car running back off till it clatters then a qtr turn wait for idle to come back up and then do this 3 more times for a full turn in tightning...iv'e always done qtr-1/2 myself...any clues why so much...??lead me to the light guys....

I don't trust those books at all. Chiltons is better than haynes tho. I've found numerous errors in both. If in doubt, crack open the GM shop manual.

Axle/Gears: 12B-3.73/9"-3.89
One full turn is the factory setting, puts the lifter plunger mid-way in its travel.

Higher RPMs can be had with less preload, but it really isn't an issue below 5500. I still set mine at 1/4 turn.
