temp guage ?

I am having problems with the temp guage in my 89 gta. When I turn the key to on it goes to full 260 and then drops back and won't give me any reading. My headers melted the fan switch socket and that was when the problem started. My question is were does the temp guage get it's reading from?

Coolant temperature gauge sender is screwed into the driver's side head between the #1 and #3 cylinders.

Ok I have a mechanical gauge there and I didn't put it there. Does that wire from the coolent temp sensor go from the guage strait to the sensor or does it go to the ecm then to the guage? I don't know were the wire is it is not present in the engine compartment. So I will need to trace it from it's source.

You have 3 coolant temp sensors: one in the pass side head, that turns on the fan; one in the water outlet above the thermostat, that one is for the ECM; and the one for the gauge, in the driver's side head. The wire for it is green and comes from the harness between the TB and the left valve cover.

It's supposed to go to full scale when the key is in start, so that part is doing right. Your sending unit is just disconnected. It should work when you find the wire and hook it back up.
