timing question
Okay just did a motor swap and started the engine timing by ear. It sounds smooth and has a good idle, but when I unplug the EST connector, the engine dies and won't run with it disconected. I did get a new chip and wonder if this is the problem. Is there another way I can set the timing. At idle ~1000 rpm with the connector connected, the gun read ~8* or so advanced. Suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

You have to unplug the EST before you set the base timing.

Well, I'm no good at setting the timing by ear, but I don't have any trouble starting my 388 with the STC disconnected and the #1 at it's DTC compression stroke and setting it with a timing light to 8°.
I set the base timing in the ECM first then the engine, run it for while and see what it likes, 8° seems to be the magic number for my engine.
