Fourth Gen Qusetions

On my 94' Formula LT1 i am having some problems. First off i have some trouble starting it sometimes cold/hot. I have to turn it over quite a few times before i get it going. when it does get going it will idle real low and stumble. eventually it will idle the way it's supposed. well the other problem i am having with it is sometimes and only sometimes when i start it the engine rpm's will jump to 2000 and stay there.(man am i glad it's 6spd/auto@2K in drive is not good.) i'm not sure if the 2 problems are related but maybe they are. the car has new plugs, wires, and air filter. well i hope someone knows something about fourth gens.

If your opti is bad it will cause some of the problems you are describing but that doesn't seem likely what will happen is the opti will get mostiure in it an cause the sensor that reads of the reluctor wheel to not fucntion correctly. If your opti is a 96+ you don't have to worry about this as much because it is vented but it is still a posibality. You might be better served to take it to a dealer and talk to a mechanic up there and maybe he can lead you in the correct direction opti-spark units can get rather pricey not to fix the problem.

it's a 94 type unit. man are the opti unit's expensive. they're like $600 bucks. I had an idea. maybe the IAC valve is going bad? or the MAF sensor? i remembered that once before the car just refused to start. i parked the car for a week before i messed with it. Along my troubleshooting way i disconnected the MAF and the car started right up. I'd hate to have to take it to dealer but it's looks like a possiblity. thanks anyways

this kind of problem is very hard to diagnose without using a scanner, but i'd start by checking fuel pressure when this happens. also you may want to check the throttle body to see if it's badly gummed up inside and at the iac. if your running a k and n filter, check the maf sensor for oil buildup. it could very possibly be the egr valve sticking open also. just a few things to check. i also have a 94 z28 m6.
