what potential do i have?
whats up guys, i have a couple of questions. i bought an 83 pro-street camaro. the car has a 383 stroked engine. it has a barry grant 750, ceramic coated headers, is making 14 to 1 comp, i can only use 114 octain gas or higher, it has DartII heads, electric water pump, the front end of the car is all fiberglass,(tilt front) the car seems to be pretty quick. i have only played around with it in a very long driveway at my bros jobsite. i have never taken it to the track yet. my questions are: Do you think that it will run low 11's & high 10's in the quarter? and do you think it will pull the front wheels off the ground when i launch with slicks?

there's no way to answer that accurately without seeing/watching the car,but If it don't run 11s and yank the hoops a bit,it's a major poser.I'd certainly be looking for 10's from any car that is tubbed and carries that kind of compression.

thanks for your input IROCKZ, yes i'm hoping that this car will exceed all of my expectations. the car is put together very well or at least thats what all the guys over at my bro's shop said. they said that it should perform even better with the nitrous set-up that came with but not on the car

I just took a quick look in my IHRA rulebook and it appears that you dont have to relocate the battery.
If you do it needs to be in the back hatch in a metal battery box and they require a shutoff switch if you move the battery back there.
If your looking to pull the front tires up, the more weight you get in the back the better!

thanks 84z28350, yeah i was surprised that the former owner didn't move the battery. he had a nice bracket made & welded in place at the front. i bought a relocation kit from Jegs, but the kit does not have a metal box, just a 20 foot hot cable, a 3 foot negative, and a plate.

Alright, well if you want to keep it IHRA legal heres what you gotta to, straight from the book
all wet cell batteis must not be relocated into the passenger or driver compartments and must be mounted securely. max of 2 batteries with a total weight of no more than 150lb is permitted. plastic hold down straps are not permitted. all relocated batteries must be secured with a minimum 2 3/8" diameter rods or bolts. when relocated to the rear of vehicle, the passenger compartment must be protected by a firewall (battery box) consisting of a minimum .024 steel or .032 aluminum. the on/off switch must be connected to the positive side of the electrical system and when deactivated must shut off all electrical functions of the vehicle.
damn, my hands hurt now...

okay got it, so i will buy the box. i wasn't sure how i was going to mount the battery. i was thinking of cutting the sheet metal just rear of the passenger side tub, then build & weld in a supporting bracket to have the battery sit down inside the sheet metal, but with a metal box,it can sit up on top of the sheet metal.
where did you obtain an IHRA rule book? how can i get one?

Anyone who built a 14:1 CR engine, had at least 10's in sight.
You may want to spend a few bucks on a dyno run to see what you have.
best advice I can give you is once you find out what you have and take it
to the track
is not to try to get your numbers on the first pass.
Start slowly until you get used to the car.

Go to www.ihrastore.com
$10 will get you the book, you should also be able to pick one up at the track.

thanks 8MIKE9, thats some good advice. Everyone who has some knowledge about this type of thing is saying the same thing, that is; take it slow and learn the car first. i probably will only drive the car a little, because i'm such a fat man and have a big gut, that it is such a pain for me to get in and out of the car. my 21 year old son is going to be my driver. he is learning the car. i'm considering having the roll cage modified so that it would be easier for me to get in &out. i saw a pro street nova once that had the bar that goes down by the driver door cut and hinged so that the bar swung out allowing easy access. or maybe i should just lose about fifty pounds.

Find out what sanction your local track uses as far as rules, and study it before you modify the cage. It's better to know before the first cut is made, than to modify and find out that it won't pass tech.
