What Would You Do????

Here's the choice. I had my car up here at college, and I only drive about 25 miles a week. Which puts hardly any miles on my car. But when I don't start it everyday, it usually cranks a little while before starting and my alternator squeels until the battery charges, which is quite embarassing. The only time my car gets highway miles then is on my way home, 400mile roundtrip, which I don't take often, just on holidays and maybe a weekend or two.
My other choice is, I brought my mom's car up this time to college. It's a Lumina and gets almost 2x the mpg that my car gets. So, basically my mom has my car, which she drives it probably 70 miles a week, with no highway miles.
Which would be better for my car, getting started daily and driven with slightly more miles at home, or have it up here at college and getting less than the miles a week on it.
Also, for the Spring 2002 semester, I figure it should be quite snowy up here in the mts. Which I wouldn't be able to drive in the snow. The Lumina is FWD, so it would handle better, if I did have to drive.
What would you do if you were me.

First thing I'd do is make sure I didn't trash mom's car

I'm still not sure on this "front wheel drive is better in the snow" thing personally. I grew up in new hampshire and drove mostly rear wheel drive during the winter. With rear wheel drive, give me a good set of tires and I can run circles around front wheel drive cars with my camaro. I've found I get better control of a rear wheel car then a front wheel car. I'm thinking everyone is just doing it wrong....

Maybe it's just me tho

My 2 cents.

I'll agree with you that the FWD Holy Grail for snowhandling is overhyped a bit. I've driven FWD cars in the snow for years now, and I hate it. I don't care how much weight is on the front end, once you start slipping, you can't steer. And that sucks. The only advantage FWD has is from a dead stop, and maybe accellerating. Just ask the V8 Mustang guy who was moronic enough to challenge me and my Camry to a drag race in the snow. And lost!

So...you want to be safe and have control in the snow, give me a RWD. You want to not be stuck in the snow from a dead stop, or win drag races, get FWD.
