fuel pump?

Last week my car died. At first it was not cranking over and that part of the problem has been fixed. Now I don't have any fuel pressure and can't hear the pump come on when I turn the key to the on position. I called around and it is going to cost about 500 bucks for a mechanic to fix. I am capable of doing quite a few repair jobs, but according to my manual there is a lot involved such as removing the rear end, exhaust, etc.... Does any one know if there is an easy way to fix this or will me and a friend be working on the car all weekend. If its an all weekend job does anyone have precise instructions on how to do cause the haynes manuall isn't very exact????? Thanks for all the help once again!

I haven't done the job myself but I have a little advice on the pump. Since you're changing the pump get a good unit so you won't have to do this again if you start making upgrades to the engine. On that note you should get a Walbro Pump. Search the boards and you'll see this is the pump of choice and it's priced right too. You'll need what they call the universal pump but the thing might as well be called made to fit. This is the site where I got mine:

Look under in-tank fuel pumps, it's the 85-92 GM Universal. Read the info to pick the one you think is best for you. Good Luck.

Make sure the fuel pump relay is good before you tear it apart.Always go the simple route first, you never know.I beleive the relay is mounted on the driver side of the firewall by the brake booster on your year.
