MSD coil -- URGENT--
Has anyone experienced problems after installing an MSD coil?
On my 91' Camaro 305 TBI, I installed an MSD coil along with MSD wires, a new cap and rotor and new plugs.
My car has been idleing rough latly and today I pulled a few plugs out to check them and noticed that they had black soot on one half side. I then pulled the cap and noticed that the middle of the rotor where it contacts the center pin of the cap had a round groove in it. I have never seen a rotor look like this. It almost looks as though it was too hot, like too much power is being supplied.
Is it alright to replace the stock coil with the MSD or should it only be used when installing an MSD ignition?

Be sure to replace the center pin in the cap with a non resistor type pin, (MSD, ACCEL), when you install a MSD coil. The factory resistor pin will overheat. also the cap and rotor must be in top condition to work with a high output coil.

I don't think I can replace the center pin in my cap. It's just a replacement cap and rotor that I got from Auto Zone, it's not a high performance part. What sort of cap should I look for that is a non-resistor type and that will work with the OEM distributor?

The center pin comes out after the HEI coil is out. There should be a large rubber washer
in the center, over the pin and spring.
You can buy a steel (non resistor) center pin
at most speed shops (MSD, ACCEL). If you suspect your Autozone cap and rotor are causing a problem, you can pick up a MSD
or Accel cap and rotor kit as well.
Consider upgrading to the MSD HEI module that matches your MSD coil. The two combined
are about as much ignition as you'll ever need.
