Head work
Hey, just have a question to ask regarding work done to cylinder heads. I'm going to be calling up a machine shop tomorrow to get an estimate on price for what I need done to my vortec heads. But just to see if I'm going to be screwed or not, I'll just start by asking people here about how much it cost to get their vortec heads worked on(since vortec heads are fairly popular around here
)
Pretty much what I need done is have the valve guide boss machined down so I can put larger springs on. I'll probbaly do the springs myself (doesn't seem too hard?) Also wondering how much it'd cost to have the heads setup for screw in studs.
If anyone can share their machine shop experiences and how much of a hit on the wallet it was, I'd be all ears
Thanks

Thanks It really doesn't matter that it's a Vortec head. Once the cutter hits the casting, it really doesn't care what name is on it. Milling the upper guides is generally done to provide clearance for smaller diameter positive valve stem seals. Milling the stud bosses provides a flat surface at a depth that will allow guide plates and screwed rocker studs. Cutting the spring pockets is done to allow larger diameter valve springs. Since all that can be done in two setups and three cutter changes (or two, depending on what tooling they use) it may be economical to have all of it done simultanesously.
Sorry, no idea what it costs since I do my own.

If you find a shop that will be nice to you, you're still looking at around $200 & probably more.
