Do I really need the Spark plug wire crimper?

Do I really need it? The damn tool costs $30 and they won't rent it at Autozone. Also, the one at Autozone is for Accel Wires. It doesn't say 'won't work with other brands' but the counter guys said they are for Accel wires. That seems rediculous considering I spent $60 for taylor wires.

The shop I bought the Taylor wires at said the crimper was $70.

Help me out here. Can't I use a wrench or something to do these or something else?

I just did Taylor wires - I used a regular old crimping tool for the little connectors - it has an ignition wire hole in it - like $5 at Walmart.

A word of advise - AFTER you cut and crimp, but BEFORE you install - check the continuity with ohm meter - makes life easy when you know the crimp didn't take before it goes in the car! I had done one badly, and couldn't understand why my idle was so far off afterwards.

I did a set of Accel wires with regular pliers. Personally, i'll stick to the pre crimped wires. When I tried to remove them later on, they just came off. Waste of $30.

Side note: Accel has 5mm wires w/90 boots that I REALLY want!

I got a really nice set of ignition wire strippers/crimpers (for 7 and 8mm wires) at Napa for around $30. I get a factory style crimp everytime, can't imagine making wire sets without them... With this tool, you'll never want to deal with the hassle of "custom" fit wires again. I've done 3 sets of plug wires with this tool so far--Not a single pulled-apart wire yet. I'd recommend it...

Oh, and a long time ago I tried making a set with regular pliers... Mine pulled apart too... Use the right tool and you'll love them!

Agreed. Use the right tool for the job and you shouldn't have a problem.
