questions

Hey everyone I'm the proud new owner of an 83 z28 with the crossfire injection. The car is in really nice shape and runs fairly well, however im a little concerned with how much of a piece of crap this crossfire injection is and my questions are probably ones youve heard time and time again. Is this motor the same one that was used with the 4bbl which was called HO? I mean is the block and heads and cam and such the same.. And what would it take and is it worth it to swap a manifold and a carb on this motor.. Is it worth my while? What kind of performance gains can I expect? It doesnt need to be a rocket as it will be my daily driver. But a little "sack" would be nice. Any suggestions as to which parts to use? The less bucks the better. Oh by the way the Car has a rebuilt 700r4 and 323 disc brake rear i believe. Im not sure if its posi or not. The driveshaft turns once in relation to the wheels spinning slightly more than three times. Any other words of advice? All input is appreciated. Thanks a million people.

ah yes, the crossfire injection isn't known to be the best.

i'm not quite sure if you can go directly to a computer controlled quadrajet, as I don't think your computer is setup for that. I also don't want to tell you to go to a non computer controlled carb (q-jet being cheapest from a boneyard, or any other regular carb) because you have a 700R4, and that would complicate things due to your lockup torque convertor.

if it was me? I'd grab a non-computer controlled q-jet from the wreckers, and an intake manifold, either edelbrock performer RPM, or a stock aluminum one from a 3rd gen V8, then remove your SES bulb, and wire in a switch for your torque convertor. That's just me though.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with more CFI help, but if you don't get much after a while, maybe pm 83CrossfireTA, as i'm guessing he knows a bit about an 83 with crossfire

Why not just junk the crosfire and go with a regular 2bbl TBI?

I think theirs a tech article about swapping out the dual TBI (crossfire) for a conventional TBI setup...

If you cant get a TBI setup out of the JY an old Q-jet carb would be the next way to go. If you can find a non computer vehicle in the JY with a 700R4 it will have a vacuume switch that operates the lockup, usually mounted up by the brake booster. grab one of those if you can, if you cant find one you can just wire the lockup to a toggle switch.

Thanks for the responses fellas. It all sounds great...I was kind of leaning towards just pulling the cfi setup and installing a performer rpm intake with egr, and an edelbrock 600 or maybe a holley 650 carb.Id also use a accel or maybe just a reman hei distributor..seems pretty simple. But now Im thinkin fuel..I read the posts about using an adjustable fuel pressure regulator..But how bout just doin it old school and using a regular mechanical fuelpump..does the motor have all the provisions for this? Reliability is key I guess. I wonder if the cam in my motor has the eccentric to run the pump. How much of a performance increase could I expect out of this setup? Is it even worth doing at all? Keep in mind this car is in kinda cherry shape and has been garaged all of its life it appears..somebody apparently really cared for it. You could eat off the interior and the undercarriage is spotless, although somebody apparently added some sort of frame connectors. The car runs sort of fine as is, Im just a little concerned as the car definitely needs to start in the morning to cart my yawning a** to work every day. Has anyone out there ever done this swap? Im sure tons of you have..what kind of problems did you run into? was the car quicker? How bout a tpi setup off of an iroc or something? I bet this is much more of a pain than the manifold and carb. I suppose ill get that switch for the torque lockup thingy. Anybody have any better ideas?
Thanks for any and all responses everybody! Yall have a nice weekend now
