what might cause this
Running the engine might cause that.

The normal products of perfect combustion are water and carbon dioxide. During warm-up, combustion is less than perfect, so some of the carbon makes it out unburned.

So, there you go: water, which condenses into a liquid; and soot.

It is completely normal.

Once the engine warms up, combustion becomes more complete (no soot), and the water stays a vapor because the exhaust is no longer cold enough to condense it.
