distributer gear????

Hi guys just looking for some input....
I bought my 86 Iroc w/ a 383 stoker 2 years ago, about 1 year after i bought it, the car started running like ****. My negihbor and I pulled the cap and rotor, and while we were at it we pulled the distributer for the hell of it. The gear on the bottom of the distributer was ground 1/2 gone!!!!!!!!! the gears were basically wore half of there original thickness. How is this possible. My neighbor suggested the motor was built and a hardened steel cam was used and the original distributer had a cast iron gear on the bottom and it wore it out that way. Well, we replaced it with a high performance brass gear, and one year later my car brakes down, and guess what! The brass gears burned right down until the last gear gave out and obviously the car died emmidiatly!
Whats wrong with my cam shaft thats cause these gears to wear out?????
PLEASE HELP!!!

Use a distributor with a STEEL GEAR. Or install one on your current distributor.
