TIMING MARK?
i have a zz9 cam with a mini ram, and was checking the timing today and i saw something WEIRD.when you check base timing, the timing tab is on the driver's side, but the balancer mark is near #2 cylinder.now if i advanced the light up to about 45 degrees the mark would be at 6 degrees, and then jump around a couple of inches.i think the balancer is for a top view like the timing tab being in the center of the cover, but what would make it jump like that?
my ony 3 guesses are 1]bad gear on the distributor, 2]bad timing chain 3] faulty timing light. now keep the only thing wrong with the motor it sounds like is a valve adjustment. any suggestions?

Try a different timing light. If it's been bouncing around in your tool box for a few years, chances are it's shot. I had problems with mine a while ago and replaced it with a good one and now never let anyone borrow it.
