Disconecting the MAP sensor
89 GTA 5.7 TPI. I had stalling problems and the car would die after a few seconds of running. I disconected the MAP sensor and turned the key and it fired right up with no problems detected. Runs like a champ.
My questions is do I need the MAP sensor? Can I keep it disconected without any mechnical problems and save $180.00
BTW, thanks to all those who gave me hints on the problem I had.

You won't have any "mechanical" problems with it disconnected. You will have some mileage issues and a check engine light with it disconnected. I don't know where you got your price from but $180 seems way high for that.
Are you talking about a MAP, or MAF? On an 89, you should have MAF, unless it was converted to S/D. Then, it still would be expensive for a MAP sensor.
MAP=manifold air pressure
MAF= mass air flow
MAP=manifold air pressure
MAF= mass air flow

Mass Air Flow Disconnect
I looked up the price at autozone and advanced auto parts and it was $180.00. Its the part that is in between the intake manifold and the air cleaner. I was told that it can be cleaned but using some type of chemical cleaning agent.

That would be your MAF, not MAP. You are talking about the Mass Air Flow sensor. And yes, you need that to run properly.
