Has anyone cut the fuel fill on their tank??
Has anyone cut the fuel fill on their tank??
I am switching the tank in my engine swap, and relaized how much of a PITA it is to get the tank out of these cars.
I noticed on my 89 Silverado that the fuel filler is attached to the body and does not go to the tank. But there is a rubber hose that connects the spout to the tank. It was not cut as it appears to be molded that way.
I was thinking of doing the same on my Trans Am.So the filler would stay attached to the body. unclamp the rubber hose from the tank and drop it out. Seems like it would work.
Now of course there would have to be safety precautions like draining the tank and airing it out be for a cut is made to make sure there is no fumes left.
Like I said this is just an idea and wondering if anyone else has done it. I understand it is risky, but like I said just wanted to see if anyone did it.
Thanks

I don't think that would work, since the fuel filler neck is not really attached to the body. It just pokes through a hole in the plastic. I also have an 89 Silverado and just did a fuel pump change on it, so I know exactly what you are talking about. In reality would the amount of work to fab something like that be worth it when you may only have to drop the tank 2 or 3 times over the life of the car?

One of the previous owners did this to my son's GTA. Wish I had looked before I dropped the rear to R&R the fuel pump, because you could leave the shocks and sway bar in place and still get the tank out.
