2 fuel pumps?

I have an 85 Iroc TPI with a 305. I "believe" the fuel pump is going. Noticed there was some hesitation at times when I would pull out from a stop, then today, had a rough time getting her started. (Would crank, but took a lot of turns on the key to start her) Then after I started her, after warmed up, she fired up. Anyhow....was told by the auto parts guy there are 2 fuel pumps on these cars? One in the engine and one in the tank. Does this sound right?

not if you have anything fuel injected, all you have is the intank pump.

my carbed 305 on the other hand has 2 pumps.

2 fuel pumps

Yea guys....I called and specifically told them it was a TPI. (Guess cause I was a woman, they thought I didn't know any better?) Anyhow, If I can get her started, I am taking it to a Chevy Dealership to be fixed, probably have to work "all month" to pay this bill! ARGH! (Guess bills and food aren't being bought this month!) haha..... I won't put my friends through that nighmare to fix. What bums me out, just filled the tank 60 miles ago with 93 octane gas, believing it was bad gas! Suspose most of that will have to be emptied out!

The dealership is going to rape you with a price you know? You should try local mechanics first.

or a couple of mechanically inclined friends. they areny the worst things in the world to do, takes a few hours if you havent done one before, but get a Chiltons manual, some tools, a pair of jack stands and a jack, and a case of beer and you are all set.

you are looking at at $400+ job, it takes 3.8 hours PLUS the time to drain and fill the gas tank, so figure 4 hours at atleast $100 an hour, plus another $128 bucks for a pump (from the dealer that is) and you have a an almost $600 job after taxes and such.

the pump costs $80-$100 bucks at most part stores for a Carter or similar pump, and you dont HAVE to remove the rear end completely (I didnt when i did this 3 times) but if you have some good friends to help I say do it yourself and save the monies

fuel pump

Well, my "so-called-friends" don't want anything to do with that fuel pump issue. I am "WELL AWARE" of the cost of the thing. I am just going to eat it and get the Chevy garage to do it. The thing of it is, I just filled that damn tank up! I checked into local mechanics and the cost was just $5 an hour less than the Chevy garage. They are charging me $50 an hour labor. I am guessing about $700 anyhow....maybe more. I definately want a new fuel filter in and the lines replaced. The thing is 21 years old, all originial, nothing ever wrong with it until now. It just sat and sat years before I got her. I guess I should of just emptied the gas out when I got her, and cleaned the tank, perhaps this wouldn't have happened. (Live and learn!) The lady I bought it from; used "stabil" in the gas tank. (So I was told...) Thanks guy, I will keep you posted on the exact cost and what they thought this problem with it not starting proper was. I am just "guessing" it is the fuel pump. (sounds like it anyhow)
