ignition timing, vacume/elec diagrams?

This past week I ran into a problem while changing the termostat the stud broke off, then the easy out broke.. It was a mess. Found a local machine shop to take care of the problem. Heres where my questions start, I removed the intake manifold to give to the shop to fix, in order to remove it I disconnected various vacume and electrical lines. I installed the manifold today and and got the car running to pretty much the same way it was before the removal, but the SES light is on now while running. Im leaning toward something being diconnected or hooked up wrong. I tried using a code scanner and its acting as if the code scanner isnt even hooked in (not sending the code 12 repeatibly ses light just stays light up). Im wondering if anyone has any diagram of some sort showing vacume and eletrical lines and where they should all plug in..etc

Im also looking for info on how to check and set the ignition timing. My haynes book doesnt go into to much depth on it. Thanks ahead of time for any help/input.

*edit* The car is a 1987 firebird formula with a 305 and carb.

Well, here is something for your timing question. I posted this for someone else with another timing question. I'll just cut and paste it here:
First check on your harmonic balancer for the timing mark. Make sure you can see it. Since you have a new engine, i'm sure you could. Next, You will want to bypass the ECM. If you don't do this and try to adjust the timing, that timing mark will be fluttering all over the place. Now, in my 91 GTA there is a plug on the left side (passenger side) of the engine compartment with a brown and white wire. If I recall, it is near the the A/C condenser. This has to be disconnected. Now your engine may not have this plug but have a vacuum hose bypass at the distributor that you have to disconnect and plug. If so, using a golf tee or something like it will help in plugging it. Next after the bypass is dissconnected, hopefully you have a distributor wrench with a 9/16 head. The distrubutor hold down nut is hard to get to without one. If you look below your distributor cap, you will see the nut. You will have to loosen it just a little bit, not much. Next, hook up the clamps on your timing light to the battery and then hook up to the #1 plug wire with the wire clamp. (wire closest to front of car on drivers side) After the timing light is hooked up, start the engine. With your left hand, shine the light on the timing mark on the harmonic balancer, and with your right easily rotate the distribtor. You will see the timing mark flashing rapidly and moving as you move the distributor. For this car stock timing is 6* by the way. When your set, turn off the car, tighten your distributor hold down bolt, reconnect the bypass, and also it is recommended to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to erase any trouble codes from the ECM when you unplugged the bypass. Once everything is hooked back up and tightened down, your good to go.

Found out what was wrong with the ses light, (fuse was blown ) Now the cars starts and then stops almost instantly. If no one has a diagram of the vacume and electric hookups, any idea where I can get/buy one? Thanks for the help guys. And thanks zeppelin5000 for the timing info.

AcedRaven and Obarrt check out AutoZone.com - Get in the Zone! . You should be able to find what you need. Select your vehicle using the link under the AUTOZONE emblem, upper left corner, then select repair info which will take you to the good stuff.

This is a very good site for finding all kinds of technical data for all our cars.

I have a 305 TPI setup in my camaro and recently pulled the entire intake off and had to do my homework to correct a hack job by the previous owner.

This should help you out. Good luck,

And if not, IIRC (which is a stretch at times), the haynes or chilton's manuals have these diagrams in the back of the book(s), which should be, IMNSHO, the -minimum- first two tools you buy to work on your car (unless like our old friend Kidrcth you need to buy a clue too - Hi Mikey!! ).
