Converting to External Fuel Pump

I would like to convert my '90 Formula to an external, in-line fuel pump. Can someone tell me what exactly this involves? Can I just disconnect power to the internal pump and the install the new one? Will I need to completely remove the old pump? Will I have to install a different fuel tank? If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

BTW, I did search. I got about a zillion pages with anything with external appearance modifications that were using high-octane fuel and wanted to pump up the volume of their subwoofers!

Well, you will have to remove the old pump and fabricate some kind of pick up and strainer in it's place. That could be interesting in itself, but not impossible. You then put the in-line pump back by the tank and preferably below it or at least at it's lowest point and go from there. If you remove the old pump, you will likely loose your fuel level gauge sender as I believe it is mounted along with the pump. You may check this out when you get the old pump out and see if you can leave the sender in place and just do some kind of hose, metal line to replace the fuel pump body. I'm sure others with more hands-on experience with this project will chime in.
Good luck!

Or you can just get a Gas tank sender for a carb car (no pump).

Re: Converting to External Fuel Pump

What the one guy said is not right... You can keep your existing sender provided you attach the 2 parts of the line in the sender with fuel injection hose and clamps OR replace altogether with a carbed sending unit.

YOU WILL NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR EXISTING WIRES TO USE AN EXTERNAL PUMP. Especially if you use a Bosch 044 pump like I am. It draws almost double the current of the stock pump. I put my pump where the old fuel filter was and it exits into an elbow and then into an inline filter. Keep in mind also you will probably want a check valve to prevent drainback into the fuel tank which drops the fuel pressure increasing crank time slightly.
