general tuning question(s)?????

I have an 84 Camaro SC 305 ,700R4 auto ,4bbl quadrajet car.Questions are first I am trying to prep car for calif emissions test,so far I have replaced the plugs,wires,distributor,carb,MAF sensor,all off of a 84 trans am with same emissions sticker # that was located under the hood,all except of course plugs and wires and a new bosch O2 sensor put in a week ago,now I also put the EGR from the TA on my car and immediately noticed that my car was running alot better off the line plus at freeway speeds as well,then I noticed that the EGR valve was a positive back pressure unit and the one that came off my car was a negative back pressure unit so I took it off and put the original neg back pressure unit on and my car is back to running sluggish again.Can I run the car with the positive back pressure unit even though it came with the negative one?I also swapped out the The EGR solenoid from that same car.2nd question I went to time the car and when I unplug the EST or 4 wire connector from distributor my timing marks are off the scale cannot see them at all.Does anyone no why?My car has no power when my marks are anywhere near 6 BTC ,I am also getting intermittent check engine light with a code 44 but light only comes on when I am stopped at light etc..for more than 30 seconds or so than when I gas it it goes away until I stop again?????????????What's the deal? Before I started changing stuff the check engine light never has come on before."HELP please" !!

I've heard that the Bosche 02 sensors are not too compatible with 3rd. gens. evidently, it is too fast for the comp. and screws up the fuel ratio. In that case, it eventually will mess with the EGR operation. Might want to check on that subject and consider an A/C delco unit.

o.k. thanks for the 411 on the O2,however I am still seeking answers to the other ???'s.Why my timing marks are off the scale with comp unplugged at distributor?And since I am using essentially all of the emissions parts including carb,distributor,MAP,etc..off of a car from junkyard that has same identical emissions #'s and all the parts were in very immaculate condition at least from a visual aspect which probably does not mean much..lol.The only noticeable difference was that the parts car was using a positive bp EGR and my car calls for the NEG bp EGR but logic tells me that since I am using almost every emissions related part off of that paticuilar car except the ECM than it stands to reason to me that I should be using the EGR valve off of that car too right?I removed the Bosch O2 and replaced it with factory one that I had originally on car and code 44 is gone.Also my car is deiseling when I turn it off,timing problem again I assume.I have until the end of September to get it smogged,been running on temps for almost a year trying to get this thing running right and the screwed part is I am on a very tight budget that is why I have been gambling on the use of junk yard parts........This car which I bought off of craiglist for $300 is turning into a money pit and it has to go to a Test only for the smog.
