Need some advice.....
Ok.... 89 IROC w/ 5.7 -Auto. 58,000 one-owner miles. Completely stock except for a Hypertech chip. I have just purchased the car and it runs beautifully. It sometimes needs some gas when starting, which I found funny. Otherwise, it usually starts and idles fine.
But..... sometimes, it wont idle at all. So far, it seems to happen after you have driven it for a bit and heat soaked it, but not always. If you can run it on the highway for a few miles it will idle fine. However, if you are in stop and go traffic, you have to keep your foot on the gas when you let off or it dies.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Try and go to an auto parts store and have them check the computer for error codes. Last time I heard advance auto parts does it for free.

first thought is the chip is causing it. Do you have the stock chip still, to try?
Other then that, vacuum leak, or TPS /MAF (or whatever controls idle air flow on that car), could be screwy - but that would typically throw a code.
58,000 miles, it should run showroom floor style. Does the previous owner know anything about the weird idle issue? that's usually the easiest way to track down a problem with a new vehicle, ask the PO!
