Is this detonation
i recently brought my car to the track. i made 3 passes and then changed my plugs and then made 3 more. when i got home i looked at a plug with a magnifying glass and it showed shiny little specs. i had my car timed at 35* @3000 and for max power it should be timed at 37*. my plug gap is 50 and my compression is 10.3:1. i also am running autolite 3924 race plugs. should i try a colder plug? thanks

little aluminum specs?
yea, that'd be detonation, perhaps not severe though.
That plug gap seems pretty high for 10.3:1 CR, perhaps bring that down. What heat range is that plug ? I mean, what would it cross to?
What's your base timing? Perhaps the timing is starting too high.
anyway, how'd you do at the track?

I ran 12.17 at 110 mph and my best mph was 112 at 12.21. my car weighs 3304 with me in it and i did a horsepower calculator test and is says i have 428 horse at the flywheel. i should have around 490. my timing was at 35* at the track and trickflow says that timing should be 37*. i didnt want to go higher cause i think its already detonating at 35*.I havent set baseline timing either just set timing at 3000rpm. I also have vaccum advance to. do you think that could be messing with something aswell. the 3924s are rated at a #4 i think.

ok, champion crosses that to a RC12YC
That's ok, I think I run a R7C plug now, with my 10:1 iron headed motor.
Check where the heat line is on the ground strap, if halfway, you're ok. If the heat line is closer to the threads, you're too hot, and closer to the center electrode you're too cold. (I think that's right, double check that.)
Vacuum advance on manifold vacuum? that shouldn't really effect it, since once you stand on the gas, it's gone. If you're base timing is too high, it might the cause though. You could try backing it down 2* or so, and retry it.
That's a pretty good result though. Jetting is ok?
