Transmission won't shift

On my way to work on Thursday my transmission wouldn't shift. I have a 700r4 tranny that was rebuilt 3-4 years ago. I backed out of the driveway and when I put it in drive and got to around 10-15 mph. I was waiting for it to shift but the rpm's just kept climbing. I pulled a u-turn then went back to my house. When I was coming back to my driveway I put the car in nuetral and revved it up just to make sure I wasn't in second gear or something.

My car was fine on Tuesday. I put a new thermostat in on Wednesday and cleaned the engine bay but didn't drive it that day. So this happened out of the blue. I put a new filter/fluid in about 3 months ago and adjusted the tv cable about 2 weeks ago. The fluid level looks good and is nice and red. I re-adjusted the tv cable again today but Im still having problems. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Transmission won't shift

I posted a thread in the trans/drivetrain forum 2 days ago and haven't received any responses yet. I would like to figure out whats wrong sooner than later. A shop in California rebuilt the transmission when I lived over there.

I was searching some old threads and came upon a guy that had a similar problem like me. It ended up being the governor gear. Is it possible the gear is stripped out and won't shift because the tranny doesn't know how fast im going?

Yep, I just had similar but I got a Th350 so it has a vacuum modulator which you don't I do believe. Mine was a simple split in the tiny section of rubber line for it. But it wouldn't go into 3rd twice in the last week.

This is most likely the cause. The early gears were prone to "apple-coring". If it's stripped you can get a new one for $4.99 from jegs P/N:564-30124 HERE

Re: Transmission won't shift

I had the exact same problem, and it turned out to be the governor gear. Its cheap and easy to get to.

Re: Transmission won't shift

Got my replacement governor gear in the mail today. So I took the governor assembly out and it is infact the governor gear. Like half of it is gone Do I need to worry about the chunk missing? I don't see how be able to check around for it in such little space. Or do I just need to do a filter & fluid change and be done with it? And to get the gear off all I need to do is take that metal pin out and then I should be able to pull the gear off?

Re: Transmission won't shift

My entire plastic piece had broken off leaving a very small stub, and i just changed the fluid and filter and it was fine afterwards.

The pieces will not make it back to the pan because the drainback hole is so small as shown in this pic. You have to remove the tailshaft housing to fetch them out. If they stay in there they may move around and jam up the speedometer gear since it sits in a lower place.
