Pontiac 301

Hey all, a buddy of mine is looking into buying a '79 firebird with a 301. I know it isnt a third gen, but I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be possible to easily modify this motor for more performance. I found out the bore and stroke were the same as the chev 302 installed in the '67 to '69 Z28's and was wondering if the pontiac motor could be built up with similar parts and specs. It probably can't, but I figured I'd ask.

Re: Pontiac 301

That is the most worthless and balless engine probably ever made!!!

I'm not really sure how many performance parts are made for a Pontiac 301 though!??

Re: Pontiac 301

I think all short deck pontiac parts will swap over. The BOP motors I always confuse, pontiac might be the one where EVERYTHING will swap on ANY V8, and olds is the one where it's short vs tall deck...
Anyway, yea, it's a useless performance engine, absolutely no reason to even discuss trying to soup it up, before this thread gets locked for being off topic. Just tell him to not waste his time, and use an SBC. Not to "stay true to chevy roots" or anything like that, but common sense. Speed/dollar is highest on the SBC.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll just toss him the 350 I have laying around and tell him not to waste his time with the 301.
