fuel pump
fuel pump
ok still trying to get by 88 iroc 305 tbi going. fuel presure is about 12 tune up specs say 9-13 psi so I am good there.but my neighbor said it should hold after you turn the key off. Is this correct because I hear the relay kick off . does my pump seam bad?
Re: fuel pump
As long as you have 9-13 PSIG while the engine is running, it should not be a problem.
Theoretically, the fuel pressure should remain for quite some time after the fuel pump shuts off. Pressure leak down can be indicative of leaking injectors, but that is very easy to spot on a TBI unit by simply removing the air cleaner and observing. Leak down can also be due to a leaking pressure regulator, or a leaking check valve in the pump itself. Since the pump should always be running when you need fuel, and the regulator can apparently maintain 12 PSIG, there is no problem.
You neighbor may have been referring to the fact that the fuel pump can run for several seconds after the engine is turned off, since i he pump also receives power through the auxiliary oil pressure switch. Residual oil pressure can hold that switch closed for several seconds after the engine shuts off. That's actually a good thing.
