oxygen sensor

Hey guys,

I'm getting a completely new exhaust, and I need to know if I should get a new o2 sensor.

My car had been getting horrible gas milage(6mpg) and I wanted to know if maybe it was the o2 sensor...

My dad says that we might not put the o2 sensor back in because he said it wouldnt make a difference considering almost all of the computer controlled parts of the engine are coming out of the car...

I want to know what your guys opinions are on the subject, and if it is suggested to me, what kind of o2 sensor should i get, im not sure of the number of wires it has or what not...

Re: oxygen sensor

im sorta in the same boat as you, i installed headers and a y and dont know where/how to re-mount my existing o2 sensor...but besides that, you say all of the ecm stuff is coming out so im assuming your switching to carb and in that case if you are anyway, forget your o2 because it wont do anything anymre. if you bought an exhaust system that is ready to accept the o2 sensor, either just use your o2 as a (plug) for the hole (o2) bung, or weld it.

Re: oxygen sensor

^ thats pretty much what I meant, my new carb doesnt use a computer, its just straight through, so I needed to know if I really even needed an o2 sensor anyway, I still dont believe that mine was ever working properly, cuz connected or disconnected i noticed no difference in the performance of the car...

The O2 sensor provides mixture information to the computer so the computer can adjust the mixture ratio commands to the carb. If you don't have a computer controlled carb, then you only need the O2 sensor to plug the hole in the exhaust manifold.

If you disconnected the computer and didn't replace the carb and distributor, you didn't do that job right, and need to re-do it.
