Searching idle, tack spikes
car - 1987 Firebird 305 TPI SLP cam, 1 3/4" runner tubes, SLP headers, some other minor mods.
Recently I have had a few intersting things happen,
1) when the car gets hot the idle will soemtimes search, it does not run rough, usually this is an indication of a loose vaccum line or broken hose etc.. When I start unplugging hoses and then plugging the hoses it does not go away... At first I thought it might be my EGR, so I shoved a pencil in the hose... worked fine for a short time then came back... If I unplug my PCV valve and snap it my placing my finger on the hole it seems to correct it, I replaced the Valve, but it still does it. The ODD part is if I remove the hose from the RH side of the throttle body that plumbs into the valve cover on the passenger side the idle will become about perfect...
2) NOW I seem to be having another problem and I wonder if its not related. I was accelerating and the car just stopped for a split second and then I continued on my way. I was able to make it do it one other time a short time after. But while idleing in my driveway while the idle was searching up and down the tach would suddenly spike, like it was getting a bad reading or something...
Any ideas?
thanks
John

Re: Searching idle, tack spikes
Update,
I have yet to correct the problem, but I have noticed that as the engine idles at or around 600 or 650 the Steering pump pulley rattles, I am wondering if the engine is trying to retard the timing... As luck would have it on occasion it has actually stalled.
when I get a chance I will see what to do with the pulley and give an update.
