Holley Blue Blues.....

Just bought this from a swap meet. I figured it works, got it cheap. ($50) with the regulator, so why not...

Anyways, get it home, test it on the battery, and nothing. Just some sparks at the positive terminal, like its shorting. (i did it with a 10A fuse, not directly from positive to negative terminal). A few sparks later the 10A blew. According to Holley website, it should be used with a 7.5A fuse, so hopefully i didnt hurt it.

Anyways, i opened it up, the pump portion looks great. Clean, no rust, plunger and spring are nice.

Open up the motor, and im not sure what im looking at. (never built one of these before).

Need some assembly tips.

1) There are some dimples in the middle wires part. Are those supposed to be there? Is that why its not working? (refer to first 3 pix).
2) How the hell do i put it back together? Those springs go into the spades im guessing, and those bushings go over the springs, but i dont have skinny fingers, and i cant use tools cuz of the magnets. Any ideas?

Thanks.

okay those dimples are supposed to be there that is for balancing... In the last pic you have notice the spring and brush at the front of the housing there should be another brush i cant tell if that is it up by the wires in the top left... but i think the magnet section should come right off so you can get to it cause you will never get those brushes back on the shaft if it wont

those spring go into the spades and the little bushings are called brushes they ride on the copper part and are held in place against the shaft by the springs

Re: Holley Blue Blues.....

Ok, thanks. I figured out that the magnet housing comes off, shortly after i posted this.

GOOD TO KNOW THOSE DIMPLES are intentional!!! Ok, so YES there are two brushes, sorry for the bad pic. I put a spring in each spade, and slid the brushes over the springs, into the spades as well. However, during reassembly, if you notice the shaft, (with the coiled wires), from the top you see,

1) Metal Shaft
2) O-ring style gasket
3) Copper contacts
4) Coiled wires
5) the rest of the shaft

When i reassembled, i noticed the brushes in the spades only came in contact with the very top part of the shaft. ie: the metal, not the copper. You think thats the problem? If so, why do you think i cant get the shaft in far enough for the bushings to ride the copper?

Re: Holley Blue Blues.....

the brushes have to be on the copper that is how the motor works each of those copper pads is tied to a different set of windings around the shaft so as the shaft turns the magnetic field is also shifting

if you leave out the brushes can you get the shaft to seat where it should?

the brushes probably have to be held all the way into thier housings until the plate passes the brushes.

Re: Holley Blue Blues.....

Thanks for you help Spito, i appreciate it.

I just got it working. I wasnt seating it right, but i got it buzzing today.

However, i screwed up real bad. When the brushes werent seated right, i guess the motor tried to turn, and broke them. So now they are not making flat contact on the copper, because they are cracked and broken in pointy shapes. As well they are about half the length now. So its working for now, but for how long i dont know.

However, i asked my dad, he said i could probably find some brushes near to the size, id just have to sand them down to make em fit, and saulder on the wires. Do you know where i can get brushes?
