Re: converting sd to maf??

New computer, harness, intake ducting.

But why in the heck would you wanna do that anyway. MAF is a PITA. Speed Density is so much simpler and WAY more dependable. And dont give me that "its for better gas mileage" crap cause I'm not buying it. My 90 Bird with 305 Speed density gets 33mpg on highway.

Re: converting sd to maf??

I agree with you on the fact that the MAF system is indeed more adaptable to mods without having to do any prom work. That's where I can't understand hgffrank's statement that SD is supposedly so much more simple. If you do have to get into prom tuning, there's a LOT more parameters/tables you have to tweak with the SD system as compared to MAF. For that matter, just try to re-cam an SD car without any chip work and see how "simple" they are then. Be warned though, this site is so incredibly biased towards the SD setup, that if you toot your horn too loud in favor of MAF, you'll be tarred, feathered, and banned eventually if you don't submit and agree with everyone else in the end. If you ask a question about converting to SD, you'll get about 10 replies the very first day. You ask a question about anything to do with a MAF system, and you can watch the lonely tumbleweeds blowing through your post until it gets bumped off the first page. Oh wait, I forgot, you'll probably get several replies telling you to ditch the MAF and go SD. Lol. Okay, done ranting now.

Re: converting sd to maf??

Yeah, you know how they say it's a good thing to vent or purge every once in a while. I was trying to get some sound advice a little while back on choosing a nice healthy cam for my MAF car without having to resort to a custom chip, and I was hard pressed finding much useful info. The other thing you learn real quick is that you're in league with satan if you mention getting a mail order chip instead of burning your own. The standard, fit-all response is to go to the DIY prom board and learn how to do your own. So you be-bop over to that board, only to discover there's practically ZERO advice on programming MAF chips, but there's post after post regarding SD chips, and you quickly realize that 99 percent of the guys on that board seem to believe that the 730 ecm is the almighty's greatest gift to thirdgen f-body owners. Whew, ok, I guess I had a little more rant left in my system. Lol. I realize none of this is helping you with your original query. Personally, I'd pick up a MAF harness somewhere and change the engine harness since repinning/reconfiguring the existing one seems like a major PITA to me. If you had the wiring diagrams for both, I suppose it's do-able though. To re-pin it, you'd also need the correct 165 ecm style plugs to re-insert the wires into. You'll need to make sure to use a MAF knock sensor since it has a different frequency than the SD sensor, and you'll also need to make sure you have the matching ESC module that goes on the firewall behind the brake booster. SD systems don't have an external ESC module since it's controlled inside the 730 ecm. That's the only other things I can think of besides the different intake snorkel, 165 ecm w/matching prom chip, and of course the MAF sensor itself.

What's the MAF CFM limit, 500?

It might be more adaptable to engine changes w/o PROM tuning, but it is also more limited for power output.

How many changes to the engine are you going to make?
