first start in 3+ years

ok i am buying a 82 t/a w/ a 350 swap and th350 trans. im getting the car from my girlfriends ex bro inlaw and im only giving $500 for it so even if i cant get it to run the car itself is worth it. anyway what i know the car has done to it is performer rpm intake new q-jet as of three years ago hooker headers. thats what i can see but he says he had the motor built a few years ago nothign too radical cause he said it was ment to be street driven. he talks it up that it will run like a scaulded cat...well the only thing is it needs a pushrod the reason it sits. he said he had it wound out and heard a ping then looked at oil psi and it didnt drop then immeditely shut it down and hasnt messed w/ it sence. i have had the valve covers off and looked at it and surley it is a bent pushrod. i plan on trying to get it running b4 i try and getit towed home. ive got some extra pushrods ect. i plan on pulling all the plugs and changing the oil and check for shavings and either drain the tank of fuel or use some sort of stabilizer and some high test gas new plugs are going in too along with new fuel filter. as far as i know of ive pretty much covered everything but wanted some other advice before i forget something and if this motor is salvageable i dont wanna fubar it up. he swears that we can get it running pretty easy as long as we take precautions to go through and check and double check everything. ill get some pics of it within the next week but again any help or pointers or even just advise on starting a car that has sat for a amount of time. well sorry for rambling on

Change all the fluids, including the gas.

Re: first start in 3+ years

what would be the best wat to do remove old gas? ive got a bottle of stuff thats suppost to remove moisture in the take and lines and i figured if there wasnt a lot left in the tank thatg maybe the bottle of stuff i have and 5 gallons or so of high test and a lil octane booster it may be ok !!??? another thingi was talking to a guy at work about the pushrod issue and im trying to figre out how and why it bent one in the first place and we were thinkgin that maybe he over reved and thats what caused it i do know that he said he did have it wound out when it happend. i plan on ppulling the plugs and making sure there is notheing in the cylinders that isnt suppsot ot be there.

Re: first start in 3+ years

I'm thinking there should be a drain plug on the tank. If not, well, a really slow way might be pulling the fuel filter out. I also recently purchased a vehicle which had been sitting for some time. It didn't have much gas so I used an additive to remove water and then poured some higher octane gas in. Seems to run fine. In addition I did plugs, dist cap, rotor, serp belt, fuel filter, oil change, and will be doing the transmission oil. The coolant hoses should also be done if they look bad.

EDIT: probably a good idea to flush the coolant too

Re: first start in 3+ years

well bad news and good news.....good news i know whats all wrong with the car now...bad news is i have to pull the heads. on the no.1 cyl the exh valve keeper came off and dropedthe valve and bent it and bent the intake side pushrod nad valve more than likely. so im goan just tow it home and clean it up nad start pulling it apart and rebuild the top end. may even do a cam swap. he said he had a solid lifter cam in it b4 and swaped t out because it kept stalling on him and basicly put in a "rv" cam what is in there now... hyd flat tappet and a 4k stall and ran good but had probs w/ rockers working there way loose. ill post pics of the motor and the pushrods i removed they are solid pushrodsno end caps like stock. and im hoping if the piston and cyl are ok i hope to not spend more than $500 fixing it .hope fully only need two valves and pushrods.
