ZZ4 knock sensor and heat bypass
If I purchase a ZZ4 as a replacement block for my 89 350.
1. Does it come with a knock sensor drilled and tapped?
2. The heads won't have the EGR exhaust bypass, is that correct?
I'm in California so I must retain the stock EGR location. I want to maintain a stock look anyway.
3. A ZZ4 short block is available correct? I can get AFR or TF heads if needed.

I'm not sure if the zz4 crate engine will have the knock sensor or not, but you could call any of the dealers and they could tell you for sure, or someone here may also know for sure.
Regarding the EGR. You're correct that the heads do not have the EGR cross-over. Depending on the intake manifold you buy or use, some have an EGR port you can plumb into your headers or exhaust so you can maintain EGR functionality.

Every small block chevy has the drain holes in the side of the block above the oil pan that the knock sensor was later put into.

It would be easier to get carbon credits for growing marijuana than it would be to get a ZZ4 past a Kalifornia motor change inspector.
Yes, you can get a ZZ4 shortblock. Makes more sense to rebuild your existing engine, or get the L31 shortblock.
The TF heads have CARB E.O. number D-369-4, but you'd better make sure it applies to your vehicle (and I'm seriously doubting it does).
You haven't said what your goals are, but I'm betting new engine, shortblock, or heads aren't the best way to get there.

Re: ZZ4 knock sensor and heat bypass
My goals are to maintain a stock appearing 350 and just get it to squeek into the 12s. I haven't ran the car yet at a strip just because the engine is old. It runs very well though and feels like a good low 14 second car. I can say that because I have had a lot of muscle cars over my 30 plus years of driving , back when they were cheap to get, lol. At present I have 3:73s in the 9 bolt, a 2600 stall in front of a ProBuilt Automatic. good cat back, Edelbrock high flow base, ASM runners, MSD coil, K&N filters, a chip programmed by me, small Crane Compucam, air foil, and an AFPR.
I want to stay under 5800 rpm, use the TPI, all emissions equipment operative,10-1 compression-or less, aluminum heads, SLP headers through dual cats. The ZZ4 was just a thought because it has 4 bolt mains and better rods just in case I might want to redo things and add a supercharger.
L31 short block, I'm interested?

http://www.sdparts.com/product/12556...eAssembly.aspx Rebuild/port your heads, good cam, otherwise properly equipped, might sneak into the 12's.
I probably over-stated the part about getting the ZZ4 past inspection. It looks like a Vette engine, so if you equip it as a Vette engine, it should breeze through the motor change process.
