jerky & whining power steering
I just put in a new power steering pump, reused my old reservoir. Fluid level is good, used a new belt, which seems to be nice and tight.
At low speeds, sometimes, when turning i'll get a "jerky" steering wheel, and the power steering will be whining. This is far from the stops.
What would be the first thought as to what would cause this? I figured loose belt, but i've pretty much ruled that out, same with fluid level. Anything else? Bypass "thingie" sticking in the pump maybe?
Thanks

Re: jerky & whining power steering
The jerky Steering wheel sounds like line pressure problems. I am assuming that you have the stock parallelagram steering. Also it depends on what pump you bought. Some of the aftermarket power steering pumps whine louder than others.

Stock replacement pump. Line pressure problems? Whats the fix for that?
Re: jerky & whining power steering
From your description it sounds like your pressure relief is too low. Is the whining sound that familiar sound they make when they are at full lock? But its happening before you're at full lock? THAT whining is pressure relief mode. The relief ranges are pretty wide, something like 950psi-1600psi. These rebuiders don't always use the parts that are for specific cars and sell you whatever.
The jerkyness also sounds like it could be lack of flow volume. If you take it to a large open parking lot and drive about15mph and give the steering a hard quick turn, does it feel like a manual? That's lack of flow which would also be the result of using the wrong parts for your vehicle. Here's a couple links that describes how to mod the flow control valve. But if I were you, I'd skip these mods and go to a junkyard and see if you can find one from a f-car that has the same pullys you got.maybe even a few of them in case you want to modify one. I'm assuming you no longer have your original core?

I'll try that in a parking lot.
There are no V8 fbodies in JY's around here, but if it's just a matter of drilling out that part, I can always get a "new" one from the JY and redrill it if something doesn't work.
I'll take a closer look at that link when i'm home tonight. Thanks!

jack the front up and turn the steering wheel left to right about 15 times with engine off,to get the air out the lines.
