Car Sitting Too Long?

I have had a habit of letting my car sit for months on end between starting it (winters, been away from home, etc.)

I don't think this will be an issue anymore, since I'm getting a storage unit near my home for the vehicle. However, the car needed to be jump started last week (I guess the battery died from sitting too long.) I never had this problem before.

Is there anything else that the time could have done to my car? Any precautionary maintenance I should perfom before I start driving it again on a regular basis?

Adding some fuel stabilizer before you put it away is a good idea.

And if you're gonna be away for so long between starts disconecting the battery terminals so it doesn't drain the battery would be good too.

Re: Car Sitting Too Long?

Thanks for the tips guys. Is there anything you recommend I do before I start driving the car again on a regular basis?

Check the water in the battery - if its OK, charge it for a day or two on trickle charge and it should be OK if the battery isn't toast. DON'T use the alternator to charge the battery, or you may fry it.

Re: Car Sitting Too Long?

I usually park my GTA in September/October and don't put it back in service again until June/July... (Last year, I only drove it for the month of July).

Other than removing the battery and putting a trickle charger on it for a day or so every few months, I don't do anything special to the car. I've had it for 15 years. Just to be different, last year I jacked the car up and put it on axle stands for the winter.
