VIN NUMBER?????

how do I tell in the vin if its a 350 or a 305 I am 99.9999% sure it is the factory motor because the car was bought in 1989 with 35,000 miles by my buddys sis in law. also the car is a Z28 not an Iroc. Did they put 350 tpi in Z28 or just the Iroc

Re: VIN NUMBER?????

In 1989, there was no such thing as a Z28. GM had changed the name a couple of years earlier to an IROC-Z. The only other models offered in 89 was the RS and the Firebird. There's also a turbo Trans Am but that has a 3.8L engine.

In 1989, the L98 5.7L TPI engine was offered in IROC-Z, Formula Trans Am and GTA. All 3 only had the A4 transmission option. All 3 models were also available with a 5.0L engine.

The RPO codes will tell you what engine is supposed to be in the car. L98, LB9, or LO3 for the V8's.

The 8th digit of the VIN code is the engine code.
F = LB9
E = LO3
8 = L98

The 8th digit of the VIN code is the engine code.
F = LB9 - 305 tpi
E = LO3 - 305 tbi
8 = L98 - 350 tpi
