WEIRD idle... new rebuild

So i rebuilt my engine and have messed with it ALOT to get it to run right. first off the engine is an lg4 (auto) i put a hei vacum advance dizzy on and a non cc q jet. also has a larger mellings cam.

First a big prob with the idle is it always seems really high and when i put it were it runs good in gear its a really high idle in park for ex. 1800 rpm in park and 850 in gear.

then today and yesterday a little bit the car runs good at those idle speeds and then i drive it around for a while then the car starts having prob staying running when at a stop (it wants and will die if i dont give it alittle gas). the idle has to be turned up to 2000rpm in park to alow it to stary running in gear at about 800 rpm whats going on??? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

P.S. All the vac ports on the carb are blocked and and the coke is disabled

How much timing at idle?
Are you running it on ported or manifold advance?

The park->drive idle speed change - I forget what it is that effects that, i'd imagine it's a transmission setting, but I have no clue when it comes to auto-trannies.

Which melling cam was it?

Re: WEIRD idle... new rebuild

the vac advance is hooked up to very back port on the carb. Also i am unsure about were my timing is set i dont have timing marks so im just doing it the best i can by ear and the way the car runs and starts.

Re: WEIRD idle... new rebuild

so can you hear any "wooshing" sounds while the car is running? Have you hooked a vaccum gauge to the intake manifold?
