Crank sprocket removal

I am removing a gear driven timing set and installing a true double row timing set.Having trouble geting the crank gear off.I am using a small three arm gear puller and it is not doing the job. Can I heat the gear with a propane torch without damaging anything. My local auto parts store has a larger puller ,but it is a two arm puller. Will the two arm puller work OK?

Thanks

Yea, i'm pretty sure I used a two jawed puller on mine.

If you use the torch you will most likely ruin your oil pan front seal, it's quite closer there isn't it? Try the puller route first, the heat may cause more pain than it's worth.

Re: Crank sprocket removal

Yes; any of the above is OK.

About all you have to make sure of, is that you don't damage the crank threads (put a short bolt in there for the puller to work against its head); and that you don't damage the crank snout.

Beyond that, just about anything is fair game.

Filing a slot in the gear and splitting it with a chisel is another possibility.

Re: Crank sprocket removal

Find the tooth right at the keyway. Give the gear a hit with a cold chisel right above the keyway and it will split in half. This only works with the factory cast gears.
