Need help, stumped 6 mechanics including myself

alright, background. i own a 91 camaro rs v6 3.1 auto tans. when i bought the car the guy before me was "setting it up for drag" as he said, so of course all the air conditioning stuff is gone. another problem is, this guy some how hooked the starter up to a wire that runs into the chassis. so to start the car, you put the key in the ignition, turn it to on, and put this wire into the cigarette light socket and presto, the starter rolls over. whenever i got the car i would run for 10-20 before shutting off, but now it wont even start, it rolls over, but it wont fire. we pulled the obd error codes and came up with these.
33. High voltage (low vacuum) at mass air flow sensor (or MAP sensor)
46. Fault at vehicle anti-theft sytem OR Fault at power steering switch

so after inspection i found the hose to the map sensor was broken and replaced it. error code gone, but the 46 is still throwing. to this day the car still wont roll over. one friend said to check the spark plugs and injectors, but i get this feeling it not right, so i head up to my local auto zone and have my map sensor checked, its fine. the guy that checked it asks my problem and i explain it to him, he says he owns the same type of camaro and had the same problem and that it was the resistor in his key fried or something. so i called my local chevy dealer and they say they can replace the key for $40. so my question is, what do you think the problem is. im about to have the car moved to my new house within the next couple of days (moved, left car at friends house, long story) and want to get to work on it soon. i think it has something to do with the way it ghetto rigged with the starter. i really wish i had a video of it. it had me laugh for weeks, and i was the one driving the car. so in short, anti-theft error code, bypassed starter wire, is there anyway to tell what my key blank # is if it is fried out, or can it be fried out. could this problem be a faulty fuel pump or injector, i love my car and dont wanna have to scrap it cause of something stupid, so any help would be awesome

Re: Need help, stumped 6 mechanics including myself

oh, some more info. the fuel filter is brand new, and the engine does spark, i found out the hard way (friend was playing inside my car and cranked it when i had one of the spark plug wire in my hand). and when it did run, it would run perfectly fine for a while, then shut off, then it wouldnt start back up for a while. and sometimes it would start, but it would sputter really bad and the car would shake violently then stall. and when it would start doing the sputter thing, if you pushed on the accelerator pedal at all it would instantly die. you can hear the fuel pump prime so its good, relays have been checked, but one thing we noticed is, when you turn the key, the line would prime and you press the tab on the back of the head it would spray gas all the way to the hood, so fuel pressure is good, but after a while it doesnt spray as far, barely bubble out. so what i am thinking is, with the starter ghetto rigged like it is, is it possible the vats moved or died in the steering coloumn (ignition switch area) so its just not picking up the resistor in the key and not letting the fuel pump turn on. or should i look else where (one friend said check the control module, but i dont think so)

Sounds like an injector is shorted. Ohm out each injector to make sure they're all around 10ohms. One bad one will cause all 6 to act up like you describe.

i would say that it isnt an injector... at this point but it most probably is vats...

FIRST fix that wiring... that is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard of... not counting the halogen fluid

while most people dont agree on what vats will disable once it is active. it is usually fuel pump/ignition... while the fuel pump will still prime the ecm usually wont turn it on after that....

do a search on vats bypass its been covered a million times and might cost as much as 30cents at radio shack or pay the $40 for a new key

yeah, the fuel injectors have been thought of already, i do believe it was the second thing, fuel pump being the first, and yes, the wire thing is stupid. its one of the funniest things i've ever seen, never once have i laughed so hard, and i've even had girls convinced thier car was out of blinker fluid. lol. the first thing im doing is checking down the vats system in the steering column. if thats not it, i'll pull out all 6 injectors and have them tested. i'll be sure to post the results incase someone ever has this happen to them.

Did you check the fuel pressure while cranking/running/stalling? That can tell you alot.

yes we did, 0 pressure after a few seconds, telling me the lines are priming, but the pumps not activating after that, which means something is keeping it from coming on. and yes its good, we pulled it out a checked it (it took a couple of days cause of the stupid gas tank being all inconvient and what not)
