oil gauge

Hello all..... I have a 85 camaro that was a V6 and now has a V8 in it. I went from lights to gauges, the tach work great abut the oil and temp don't work. I took the green wire off the temp and put it to ground and the pointer went all the way up so I take it the gauge is ok. It's a new sending unit but have not checked if it is the right one or if just not working. The first oil gauge I had in was in with the tach and the pointer was up all the time,I checked it and the pointer would not move to good so I put in one other one I had that the pointer was more free. The pointer was about to 40# when I put it in and when I turned the key on it went all the way down like it should but with the motor running it just stays down. I put the tan wire to ground and the pointer did not move. I'm not sure if you can check it the same way as the temp. The oil sending is new too so not sure where to look from here.

Re: oil gauge

Sounds like you have the temp gauge sending unit for an idiot light (that would be, the kind somebody like me uses to see by) instead of for a gauge.

The oil pressure gauge wire is dark blue, not tan, which would tend to explain why it doesn't respond to doing stuff with a tan wire (tach???). Sounds like the dark blue wire is probably floating around somewhere disconnected. When that wire is grounded, the gauge should go to zero (it's probably laying against the block, or maybe crushed between the block and the bell housing); when open, the gauge should go to full scale.

Re: oil gauge

Thanks for the reply. most the time if I ask something no one reply s. First off it was idiot lights in the car but I put a cluster set up out of a car that had gauges (same year) the tach works fine and in all the books I have looked at shows a tan wire going to the oil gauge and a dark green one going to the temp.

Re: oil gauge

Sorry to hear about the books....

My info comes from looking at cars built over the last 50 or more years, and the wiring in them. Standard GM color codes.

The tan wire may be the one concerned with the fuel pump relay, not the gauge.

The gauge wire is blue.
