Timing Cover Removal

Hi All ! !

I have a 1992 v6 rs camaro, want to change the cam in it. How easy is it to remove the timing cover? Is it just removing all belt drive systems, and taking out the bolts to the pan? I know on the sbc the oil pan has to be considered, is it the same on the 3.1l? Whats the easiest way to get it off without removing the block out of the car?

Re: Timing Cover Removal

Im not sure if its the same for a v6 as for a v8 but for the v8 you need to remove the belts and pulleys plus the water pump, alternator etc, depending on where they are located and if they are in the way. Then your going to need to pull off the harmonic balancer. Your going to need a puller to get it off and then your going to have to press it back on once youve changed the timing cover. After the balancer is off you can just unbolt the timing cover. You might have to loosen the oil pan too to get the timing cover out and put the new one in. Its not that difficult of a job if you have the right tools for removing and reinstalling the harmonic balancer.

Thanks dude! I was hoping the balancer was the only issue i would have. I have all tools for that. I was wondering if I had to mess with the pan.

Re: Timing Cover Removal

To remove the cam you will also need to remove the intake, loosen the rockers and remove the push rods, then pull out the lifters, then you can remove the cam.
