91 RS starts, runs, dies, trouble starting

IN that order. ha Robert Pittman here, first post. recently purchased first camaro. Vehicle is a 91 RS w/ 305 TBI. Recently had then entire intake manifold cleaned as it was filthy. The car will start up fine, I'll let it warm up, and take it out on the street. I'll run through all 5 gears and coming up to the stop light, I'll roll down the hill and kick it in neutral. Dies, EVERYtime. Usually after sitting for a while it will start back but today it didn't, so here I am. I'm at a loss. I honestly don't even know where to start. Hope y'all can help Thanks

Re: 91 RS starts, runs, dies, trouble starting

Welcome to TGO

Question.
How much gas you have in your tank???
When was the fuel filter changed
What is the fuel pressure? Was the Fuel Pump (FP) ever replaced??
Do you get spark when cranking???

Post your findings..

Re: 91 RS starts, runs, dies, trouble starting

gas tank at this time is half, problem exists at all fuel levels.
fuel filter was changed in september
no dice on the fuel pressure and unsure how I'd find that out and to my knowledge its the original pump.
spark when cranking? unsure as to how to know that
distributor rotor and cap changed sept as well as plugs and wires
thanks for the welcome and the help

Re: 91 RS starts, runs, dies, trouble starting

Ok Romeo.

Couple simple checks.

1) Verify spark during cranking. Take easily accessible sparkplug wire from its respective plug. Get an in-line spark tester - most autoparts stores cary them, for example:
SG Tool Aid (SGT23900) Hands Free In-Line Ignition Spark Tester
LIsle ZX508137A Inline Spark Tester
Connect inline tester and have a helper crank the engine over while observing tester. If you get spark great, if not - well we'll have to troubleshoot from this point on.

2) Fuel pressure. This is a bit more involved. TBI system does not have fuel pressure test port. You can rent or buy a basic fuel pressure gauge kit for about $40 online. Fuel pressure gauge test T can be connected at the fuel filter. You'll have to force FP to operate by connecting +12 volt jumper wire, with inline fuse, from sig lighter to terminal G of ALDL connector. You should be able to hear FP operating. With FP tester connected you should see pressure quickly build up and remain near constant while pump is running. Stock TBI system needs about 11 to 14 PSI fuel pressure to function normally.
