i need help choosing a mild cam

ok guys i bought a 1986 monte carlo 305 engine not the H.O. engine all stock with 87,xxx miles. i want to build it up some so i plan on buyin the following parts from summitracing this friday dec 7,2007 and i live in cali so everything has to be smog legal.

edlebrock performer intake egr #3701
edlebrock 600 cfm carb #1400
edlebrock tes headers #68743

the thing im not sure what cam to buy to add more power and still remain smog legal, i have zero knowledge on cams period. also if i change the stock cam with a aftermarket 1 will i need to change any other components on the engine as well for that cam swap. please suggest a good cam for my setup. sorry if my cam question is stupid but im still learning guys...thanks for the help in advance

Re: i need help choosing a mild cam

The Edelbrock carb is not smog legal in CA. There is no way that it can be made so.

There is exactly ONE carb that is:

The one that's on the car now. It's the only option you've got.

As for a cam, look at the Comp XE256, and all of its supporting stuff (especially the valve springs and their hardware).

That's the wrong exhaust system. It's for the Camaro/Firebird body, and will not fit the G body.

DO NOT get the one for the non-HO motor!!!! (68782 or 3) It will preserve the bottleneck in your system; namely, the teeny little Y-pipe and cat size. Instead, get the ones for your car with the HO motor http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=EDL%2D68793 ; and use the money that you WOULD HAVE wasted on that carb to get the HO 4-bolt cat http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=CTO%2D4116 and the cat-back for the HO setup. I'd suggest this one here http://store.summitracing.com/partde...HOK%2D16810HKR .

What Sofa said all the way.

Another cam choice that works well when upgrading the low-output LG4 305 is the old Edlebrock Peroformer cam. It's a mild cam as far as performance stuff goes, but it's a fire-breather compared to what came in your motor stock. Easily compatible with the stock computer controlled carb and distributor.

The Edlebrock Performer cam is also sold as a Summit house brand cam for peanuts- $80, including new lifters. It's Summit part number K-1102.

Re: i need help choosing a mild cam

ok heres my new parts list everything im ordering from summitracing so if you have the time check these parts out i have the part number for each item.

PART LIST
edlebrock tes headers #edl-68793 $450
edlebrock performer intake egr #edl-3701 $157
Q-jet stock carb thats bolted on the 305 engine now

Cam/Lifter combo
i just found this at summit check it out and let me know if this will work for me, its a cam and lifter combo part # sum-k1102 $90
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku

im tryin to keep it mild and not get caught in buying all these extra parts so can i just add the cam/lifters i selected and us the rest of the stock parts. summit has a suggested parts list which includes new valve springs and timing chain and a few other items but this is just a 305 and not a major 350 build so can i bypass all the other little things they are offering to buy

No, you definately need valve springs- they're a wear item. See if summit has a kit which includes valve springs - I know i've seen it.
A cloyes double roller timing chain is $40. That's one tank of gas - nothing compared to the "fun" you have when it wears out and breaks. Again, this is a wear item, supposed to be replaced at... What, 100,000miles?

If you're worried about cash, leave your stock intake and get valve springs and timing chain instead. The intake is easy to replace later (easier to get to than the timing chain), and, virtually identical to the edelbrock performer anyway...

Re: i need help choosing a mild cam

I put the lunati voodoo 60101 in my '86 LB9 and have been happy with it. A buddy also put the same cam in his 305 and was pleased with it as well.
