my camarobackfires...help

hi, well its my first car but its the car ive always wanted...i have a rs 89 v6 2.8...and i backfires. I dont know much about these cars but im trying really hard yo do what i can cause i really want to keep this car.

well heres my problemmy car backfires to the point were it blew open the muffler......the car ran fine the first couple of days that i got it...but then problems.....so i did a complete tune up changed the oil air and fuel filters........spark plugs and wires.....it ram good for like half a day and thein it started backfiring like crazy. I i replaced the timming belt.. THen the car ran excelent, it had power and shifted nice.....thien like 2 days later the car backfired again and ripped the new muffler once again.
my car now runs good like for 5-6 miles then it backfires and does it repeatedly everytime i step on the gas. it turns off by itself, and when it backfires i let it idel for a while and the rpm rev up and down uncontrollably. i try to rev it up slowly but that doesnot help. it just backfires....please help me i dont know what to do......it losses a lot of power with every backfire

Re: my camarobackfires...help

It sounds like the timing could be off, or it's running way too rich and fuel is burning in the exhaust. You you get a check engine light at all? Have you checked the timing with a timing light?

When it's running regular, is it smoking black at all? I'm with Ward, sounds like it's running way rich and/or the timing is way off.

Re: my camarobackfires...help

Sounds like one cyl isn't running, and the raw fuel that gets dumped in the muffler is getting ignited.

Look for disconnected plug wires, or damaged places where they can be arcing to something (exhaust would be the first suspect); and fouled plugs. Basically, check your work. Act as if you're your a-hole boss, trying to find something wrong with it; not, as if you're yourself trying to convince yourself that it's right.

Re: my camarobackfires...help

I popped my muffler too but it didn't burst though I feel like an a$$ because I did it when I was picking up my friend (my horn button is broken) I guess it was gonna be changed eventually any how.

I definitely agree with those two get a timing light on there.
