Speed gauge Doesnt work

I have a 86 firebird 6cyl 2.8 and well my speed gauge stopped working. The gas and cluster lights still work. I think it could be the cable but someone told me that it might be the gear in the transmission. Now if it is that gear is it worth repairing. My trans has about 169000 miles on it and the trans fluid is getting dark cause I was told that after about 100,000 its just best to just let the trans die. Does it cost alot to repair it? any feedback would be thanked

Your car doesn't have a speedo cable, it has a speed sensor. It's located in the transmission tailshaft, on the driver's side. I would first make sure it's plugged in, and if so, consider replacing it.

Also I would do regular maintenace on the transmission. If it is still working properly than keep it working, to rebuild an automatic transmission is not cheap at a shop.

Re: Speed gauge Doesnt work

What the person at the shop told me is that if i dont know if the trans got regular maintenance of the trans its best to leave it alone. He told me that if it never had regular maintenance it makes its own eniviroment and if you change it you will lose anything that is gripping in the trans, which can cause it to stop working. but thanks for telling me about the sensor
