Will my serpentine bolt up to this '70 block?

Looking at a local running carb'd 350 on ebay.

Its casting number says its a 69-80 style block and the casting number on the heads say theyre from 69-70. Its currently in a 70 monte carlo so Im guessing its a '70 block and heads

The block # is 3970010
Head # is 3927816

Will my serpentine bolt up to this?

If those heads have the accessory bolt holes in the ends, then yes it will all mount up without issue.

Those head castings you listed... you sure thats not supposed to end as 186?

If those are REALLY 186, which is much more likely, then the serp setup will work, except that one bolt won't have a hole. But you still should have enough.

Re: Will my serpentine bolt up to this '70 block?

yeah, theyre 186 not 816

What would be advised to do if I do get the engine? Should I maybe take the heads off and have a look-see just to make sure everything is in order? Should I drop the oil pan and take a look at the rotating assembly? Get a new oil pump? Change the outer main seals?

Im thinking of giving it a tune up as well. New cap and rotor, new wires, spark plugs, have new starter somewhere
Also have a new alternator for a 350, would a 350 style alternator bolt up to the alternator bracket of the serpentine or should the alternator I have be good enough?

Re: Will my serpentine bolt up to this '70 block?

350 style alternator

350s don't have a "style" of alternator, different from other V8s.

If it's the right alternator for a V8 in your car, then it'll fit your car with a V8. If it's NOT the right alternator for your car with a V8, then ..... it might not fit your car with a V8.

As far as what to do to it, no one can answer that for you. That would depend on what you feel comfortable doing, what overall condition it's in, and so forth.

I sure would not just "replace the oil pump", as a single goal of a project of taking it apart and putting it back together. That would be a COMPLETE waste of time, energy, and money, because they basically don't go bad.

If you "drop the oil pan and take a look at the rotating assembly", would you know what you're looking at? Do you have measurement tools? (No I don't mean Plastigage...) Yes/no: if you KNOW and have the tools, then yeah maybe. If you don't, and all you can do is kind of gawk at it, then all you'll do is destroy a set of gaskets, which you'll then have to replace, without accomplishing anything useful. On the other hand, are you SURE the oil pan that's on it will fit one of these cars? Many won't. If the rear main seal doesn't leak, I'd leave it alone.

If you bought it as a "running motor", as opposed to as a "rebuildable core", and ESPECIALLY if you have seen/heard it run, I'd recommend you leave it alone as much as possible. Unless you have reason to suspect that it needs work, like, you see evidence of a leak or you see oil funk in an exhaust port or something like that; or, as in the case of the oil pan, if it doesn't fit your car. Or, unless you're like me, and there is NO SUCH THING as a used "running motor", and they're ALL just "rebuildable cores".

You will ALMOST CERTAINLY have to have an extra starter bolt hole drilled. Do it BEFORE you install it. Much easier that way, to take an engine to a machine shop and drop it off, than to tow a car to the shop and get it drilled with everthing else in the way.

Sorry. I meant have an alternator that was originally bought for an 81 camaro with a 350 but was never used
I just didnt know if I should take a risk putting an engine in without knowing anything about the internals either

81
I don't think that's the same as the one for 89.

Has nothing to do with "350", or "Camaro", as such.

One quick glance is all it takes. Same/different. End of story.

Risk is just that: risk. What to do about it, is determined by analyzing risk, consequences, and cost. Those things are unique to every situation.

You might as well post on here and ask, "how much life insurance do I need?" Well, that depends on (a) how likely you think it is that you'll die, and (b) what kind of a mess you'll leave behind for everybody else to clean up if you do die, and (c) how much does it cost.

Same here. "Do I need to take it apart?" Well, that depends on (a) how likely you think it is that it's about to die, and (b) how prepared you are to deal with it, if it does, and (c) how much will it cost, and in this case, how likely is it that it will be WORSE after you work on it (gaskets not sealing for example) than it would have been if you left it alone.

Nobody out here can answer that for you. That's one you just have to work through to your own satisfaction. I know what I'd do; but that's just me. I can't tell you what's right for you in this case. There's no one universal right answer, any more than there's one universal right answer to the life insurance question.
