New IAC-TPS-MAF. Cant figure it OUT!!

Car was idling really rough and according to ecu TPS was bad. Replace that, adjusted by hand only and for a second seemed okay.. then after awhile starting idling rough again. So i repaced IAC, what the hell why not? Nothing changed actually got worse i think?? Okay today accoring to code 33 MAF sensor was bad, so went out and got one, hooked it up and again idle was high so i adjusted TPS by hand again and got it to idle at around 6-7 PERFECT. Took car for a 20 min drive and ran the best so far. Well got home shut it off for 10 min and after i started it up again back to high idle and missing really bad!!! How is this possible and WHY??

OH by the way added Lucas fuel injector cleaner when i first bought the car,, a buddy said that may be why its running so rough??

There's really no way to adjust the TPS accurately by hand. You need to use a digital voltmeter and some jumper wires to set it correctly. Voltage is supposed to be right around .54 at idle. You should also reset the IAC whenever you mess with the TPS or when you've replaced the IAC motor. Go to the tech articles section here on the site. It explains in detail how to do both of these. Until you get them set correctly, you're basically just fumbling around in the dark without a flashlight. I bought a TPS jumper harness from site member S10 Wildside for cheap (he makes and sells them) and it makes adjusting the TPS voltage a piece of cake. On your MAF problem, try replacing the 2 relays on the firewall behind the brake booster. One is the MAF burnoff relay, the other is the MAF power relay. A lot of people shell out $300 for a new MAF, only to find out it's one of the relays, which are dirt cheap to replace.

Re: New IAC-TPS-MAF. Cant figure it OUT!!

I had this same problem car ran fine sometimes and bad others. I kept getting TPS and MAF codes. I finally found a bad pickup coil in the distributor and a bad ignition module. I had bought an Accel ignition module thinking it would be better than the stock unit, bad idea, stay away from Accel they suck. The ignition module failed after 1 summer and took the pickup coil with it. Anyway a bad pickup coil in the dist. will act like TPS & MAF problems. Also you must set the TPS with a voltmeter this is the only way to make it work right. TPS setting is one of the most important things to have right to make you car run correctly. You might also check the tech article and set base idle if you think anyone moved the adjustment screw. Good luck!!!

It appears that you are replacing parts unnecessarily. Also, The code 33 usually is not a bad MAF. Nearly everybody is sucked into buying a new MAF (me included). It seems to me you need to do TPS and minimum idle tuning. As Pat Hall said, you MUST have a voltmeter to set the correct TPS voltage.

Read the tech article concerning TPS and minimum idle. Go back to the home page here and select Technical Articals then find this article you need to read under the Electrical section.

Re: New IAC-TPS-MAF. Cant figure it OUT!!

I couldn't agree more with TABBOO on the Accel stuff. Just say no! Complete garbage. A buddy of mine went through 2 or 3 Accel modules in less than a year. Stock AC Delco is the best choice for a new ignition module. And like Doc said, just throwing parts at it, hoping to fix it by process of elimination, gets real expensive in a hurry. I still love the title of that article Car Craft, or one of the car mags did a while back. It was called "TPI Gulch, Don't Fall Into It". Lol. They also pointed out how much money you can waste by throwing new parts at a TPI motor, when it's something simple a lot of times. The adjustment screw TABBOO referred to is just like the idle speed screw on a carb. You can adjust it to open or close the butterflies some, and if it's too far outta whack, it can give the IAC motor fits trying to compensate for it. So yeah, get your IAC and TPS set correctly as your first task. If it's still acting up after that, it probably would be a good idea to look into the ignition system (timing, module, cap, rotor, wires, etc.).

wiggle the wires that connect to the MAFS and see if the problem you are talking about presents itself

if it does take off the pigtail connector and tighten it up with a super small flathead screwdriver and spread some dielectric grease over it
