2 questions RE: Starting & Acceleration
Lately when I start my Camaro after it's been sitting for a few days, I've got to give it some gas in order to get it to start.Typically, I turn the key, and it tries to start and dies. Then, I hit the gas pedal once or twice and try to start it again, and it does. Once the car is warmed up, it starts on the first try. Sometimes it shakes a little bit - apparently some extra fuel gets into the exhaust or something, and it takes a minute to burn off. I don't know when the fuel filter was last changed. I got the car a year ago, and I think it may have been replaced then - I had a lot of work done on it.
It's not been really cold temperature-wise lately, probably at least 30-40*F when I start it. Is this normal? It only did this 2-3 times last summer/fall, so this is kind of a new issue. The car has been sitting a lot this winter, garaged. It's a 1991 RS Camaro, Z28 engine, V8, 5 speed automatic.
Also, I was wondering how to get the next cylinder to kick in when I'm accelerating? It's an automatic, so I finally figured out that I need to ease back on the gas, and then when I re-accelerate, the next cylinder kicks in. If I just keep my foot on the gas, it takes much longer to kick it up to the next one. Any other tips?
Thanks!

5 Speed automatic? Cylinder kicking in?
Ok, judging by the fact that pumping the gas pedal helps it start, tells me its a Carb motor. When you are talking about cylinders kicking it, you mean the gears. Cylinders are always being used, its in the motor. WHen you drive, the transmission goes from 1st gear, then to 2nd, etc.
If you are having problems starting, replacing the fuel filter is a good start.
Are you sure its a 5 speed auto? Ive never heard of that. On these cars, its either a 4 speed AUTO or 5 speed manual.

700r4 - 4 gears and TC lockup = 5 speed auto?
maybe six with passing gear? 3rd TC unlocked.

Ok, it's a automatic w/ overdrive. I assumed overdrive was considered the 5th gear, like a manual.
It's fuel injected, not carbeurator, but hitting the gas is what seems to make it start sometimes.

There is no increase in fuel by "hitting the gas". This will only open the butterfly valves and increase the air flow.
I would try just easing on the gas, when starting, to see if that makes any difference. Just cracking open the peddle.
Holding the peddle to the floor will shut off the injectors at cranking speeds (flood clearing).
