Sound from rear hatch, help please!

First let me say great site and that I am obviously new to the TA's. I just got a 1989 GTA (it runs great) and went to start it a couple days ago and nothing. I put the charger on it and immediately heard a noise from the back. It sounds like an electrical motor running. As soon as I unlock the hatch with the key the noise stops. Is it a motor to hold the hatch down? If so can I get to it somehow and disable the thing until I can get another one? How do I get to it and it is important enough to replace? Sorry for all the questions but I want to go drive this thing not look at it. Last but not least is there a good site out there carrying parts for these cars?

Just read something on a web page. IS there a switch that controls the motor? If so could it be bad and not the motor since the motor is running?

Thanks for the help!

i would say the motor is good the switch probably isnt bad as normaly it wont actuate the motor when it is going out which is the opposite of what you have
